Sake Farm is the women-run coffee farm located in Ngoma district in the east Rwanda, near the Sake lake. The idea is to empower women to work in the coffee sector, in each part of the supply chain.
The project is led by Marie Leatitia Kayitesire, who started growing coffee in 1999. Today, the farm is as big as 30 hectare with its own mill.
Marie’s vision, from the very beginning, was more than just grown high quality coffee. More than anything, she wanted to create a whole communities around coffee and to empower women to take part in that. Apart from running Sake Farm, Marie is also a board member of Women’s Coffee Alliance and SheTrades, an initiatives to strengthen the competitiveness of female entrepreneurs. Kayitesire says that her motto is this old saying „Umugore n'umugabo ni magirirane; baruzuzanya ” which translates to “Man and woman are bound together; they complement each other”.
Currently she also works as a mentor, sharing her experiences and knowledge with other female farmers, encouraging them to learn and earn more money on the farm.
